Libraries Connected is an independent charity that champions public libraries by bringing together their leaders to share experience and expertise. The Northwest chapter represents 23 library services, including those in Greater Manchester and Cheshire. We were delighted when they commissioned us to create a campaign to celebrate and promote the diverse range of services they offer.

Through consultation with their teams, we learned that that the breadth of the offer needed to be central to the campaign – libraries are not just about books – and that by showing all the things you can do at your local library we could shift perceptions to help reach a wider audience. We wanted to include a sense of surprise and discovery, and clearly convey that everyone belongs at their local library – they are free and open to all. Finally, we wanted a sense of possibility, to inspire people to engage with their local library and the amazing people who work there.

We worked closely with their project team to arrive at the campaign name, Wonderful things start at the library and created messaging across five themes: Books, books, books; Learning and Discovery; Community; Inspiration and Creativity; and Digital Inclusion. These show the diversity of what libraries offer and how relevant they are for each and every one of us. From here we came up with 20 messages, each one outlining something wonderful that might start from a trip to the library – from starting a small business or exploring a new passion, to gaining digital skills or reading the latest book release.

We developed a set of 20 characters, each of whom is accessing a different aspect of library services. These characters are designed to represent the broad range of library users in communities across the Northwest. We created a bold and fun logo and type style – we want people to see libraries as places of wonder and enjoyment. Finally, we added the call to action, What will you start? to encourage people to explore what’s on offer.

Working with our media partner, we devised a campaign to maximise audience reach across the region. The combination of social media and programmatic advertising, combined with a robust toolkit for the network to use ensures the campaign connects with the right audiences. In addition we developed campaign elements that can be used within the library environment and locally to promote the wide scope of the library offer. The campaign goes live March 2025.
